Child Online Protection Act Rejected by Supreme Court

I just found this article by Jennifer Sinco Kelleher posted on Newsday.com.  It’s a pretty sad day when the courts make such an amazing decision.  We have had several articles come out since the beginning of the year that call for more parent involvement, less government involvement, and a basic sweeping under the rug of the passion of those dedicated to protecting children online.

Does it mean that the Government doesn’t care about protecting kids on the Internet?  I don’t think so.  I think that the US Government is leaving the parenting up to the parents on this one.  I personally don’t think that the government should be telling me what is “child appropriate” information.  But there is one thing I do think the US Government should do….. Mandate Internet Safety Education in Schools.

“A federal appeals court has ruled that filtering technologies and other parental control tools are a less restrictive way to protect children from inappropriate content online.”

Basically the Courts said that there is great technology out there to perform the task of preventing kids from accessing inappropriate content, it just needs to be utilized.  So here we have once again a lack of the call for education.  Study after study has proved that EDUCATION is the key to a safe internet experience.

We, as a people, as a group, as parents, need to stand up and demand that Internet Safety Education be included in the nations school curriculum starting at a very early age and progressing through the grades all the way to high school.

Are you doing your part to educate and protect your children and those children in your community?  Do you want to do more?  Become a part of our KidSafe Network by signing up over there on the right side and join our cause to educate and protect all children on the internet.
