I won't pull you under the bus with me, but in my house the difference is usually my level of patience…

My kids are blessed with an insane sense of comic timing and razor-sharp wit to fill the timing. At 9 and 7 they can keep my wife and I cracking up all night long. Recently we went out to a local restaurant for dinner and found the normally packed room empty. It was already a good night, but the fact that we had the place to ourselves made it better.

Right away we were laughing and joking, having a great time. My son looked up and noticed the bathroom door was about 15 feet from us and said with a wry smile, "Hey, I'm going to the bathroom. Maybe you should come with me because I don't know if I can find my way back."

Cute, but not hilarious. We smiled at each other he took off. When he came out, he looked around for a second and went to sit at another table… maybe it was the moment, but we all laughed out loud.

I share that with you to tell on myself a little. As I sit here in the comfort of my office, smiling from ear-to-ear as I think of his mischievous little grin while he sat at an empty table, I wonder if it would have been as funny with a restaurant full of people. Would I have laughed free and easy or given him a look of impatience?

The answer might be somewhere in between, but the fact that I could have been different bothers me. What about the circumstances would change my interaction with one of the most precious people on earth to me?

If you're like me and would like to increase your level of patience, or at least the consistency of how your patience is displayed, here are 5 questions to answer that can make us all more solid.

1. What do I actually feel impatient with? I feel myself getting agitated…why? Identify what exactly is the problem. Is your child actually doing something bad or is it just inconvenient for you?

Are you actually feeling embarrassed by the potential thoughts of others or how your child might "make you look?" Make sure the energy is guided in the right direction and not just at your child automatically.

2. What are my priorities? If it isn't the child's behavior, your discomfort must be with something else. As the parent, you can stop the behavior to accommodate your needs, but at what risk? Which is more important long-term?

3. How can I better prepare? Patience runs the shortest when we are running behind. In a pinch, we can obviously outpace our kids in getting ready and out the door or whatever the job happens to be. But is it fair to always make them the focus of the lateness? Would the situation be better if I were more on time? How can I set them up for success and relieve everyone's stress?

4. If it doesn't go exactly as I want it to, is it a big deal? This relates back to priorities, but deserves consideration. Do we lose patience with our loved ones (and everyone else) when our plans aren't playing out? Even if they are the direct cause, is it really that big of a deal or is a moment to roll with the punches and make something great out of a potentially bad situation?

5. Am I juggling too much? Modern parents have a tendency to think they have unlimited bandwidth. We don't! That's why the priorities question is so important. If we give our time away to all of the urgent things, the important pieces get crowded out. When important pieces (our kids) want their rightful place, we feel guilty and show it as impatience. If you have too many balls in the air… drop some according to their importance in your life.

The last thought is a seeming paradox. Focus and relax. Focus on the ones that are the most important to you and relax about keeping up with the world's expectations. With our priorities in order, we can set our own expectations and let the world conform to our lives.

Our children are the most important and influential responsibility in our lives. They cannot be separated from our professions, health, social relationships, or any other area because those areas influence how we care for and treat them. However, those areas do not deserve a higher place of importance. The next time you find yourself getting impatient, ask the right questions and see if the order has gotten out of whack.

Either way, they are likely to grab pencils, pens, fashionably decorated notebooks and many, many boxes of Kleenex. With each supply they slide into their carts, they can scratch off one more item from an (always) growing list.

Even though these lists now resemble Harry Potter-esque rolls of parchment, there is one vital item missing. All kids should return to school with a BOOK in their backpacks, draw-string bags or oversized purses.

Schools don’t ask for this supply, but sending the teen in your life back to school with a book can help set them up for a successful year. It reinforces the value of reading. Studies show that reading, especially recreationally, is on the decline in both children and adults in the U.S. Finding excellent literature for teens to read is easier today than ever before. YA lit offers great choices for all readers. This habit can carry teens through a lifetime and it is never too late to get started.

Most importantly, creating the habit of reading makes teens better readers. Reading recreationally gives kids a chance to practice the very same skills that will help them read better in all of their classes. The necessity of this cannot be overstated. As students move further along in school, reading becomes the main way of learning new information. Students will read materials, and then use them in some manner in the classroom. Having an enjoyable book to read gives kids good practice that combines all the educational benefits of with all the other great things about YA lit. School is hard enough; this is a fun way to make it easier.

For those ahead-of-the-game parents who have already bought supplies, I can imagine that at least one of your kids will come home with a I-just-need-a-few-more-things supply list. And for those parents who are waiting to buy supplies in order to avoid the rush and minimize the number of trips, I wish you luck. Either way, while you’re out add a stop to pick up the one supply that the list is missing: a great book.

How do you feel about kids reading additional books outside of homework. Do you think it's important? Do you lead by example and read with or in front of your kids? What type of books do you think kids should be reading on their own. Do you go to the library with your kids? Please leave a comment and let us know your thoughts.

Participants with a BMI at 25 or over did not develop any eating disorder symptoms after 2 years, compared to 11.9% of their peers. Amongst women already suffering the early stages, 14% ended up diagnosed with an eating disorder within 2 years, compared to 30% of nonparticipants. Recently we were contacted by the U.S. Department of Health to partner with them for a dance contest for their Best Bones Forever! (BBF) campaign, which is a national bone health campaign led by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office on Women’s Health. The campaign targets girls ages 9-14 to build bone strength “from the inside out” by encouraging increased calcium and vitamin D consumption and physical activity. Many of you are aware of my mission to ‘empower girls from the inside out,’ so you can see the synergy in this partnership!

So when they asked BYOU to partner with them on their contest for girls, we were very excited!

Today, Best Bones Forever! and teen pop recording group Savvy, who is featured in the TV show The Wannabes aired in 92 countries and on Radio Disney, announced the launch of the Let’s Dance Contest. With a nod to First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! campaign, the goal is to get girls moving and help them build strong bones, all while having fun with their friends.

Girls across the country are invited to form a group with their BFFs (best friends forever), choreograph a dance routine to one of five Savvy songs, record themselves doing the routine, then upload the video to the contest website, www.bbfletsdance.com. The winning team will win a trip to appear in a Savvy music video, and EACH WEEK a featured video will be selected where every participant will win a fun prize from girls’ self-esteem company BYOU Be Your Own You!
“The Let’s Dance contest is going to be awesome,” says GiGi LeMaire, 14, of Savvy. “We want all girls, whether they’re trained dancers or they like to dance just for fun, to get involved and show us what they’ve got!”

While the Let’s Dance Contest is all about having fun, it’s also meant to help girls get active. “To stay healthy and build strong bones, girls need an hour of physical activity each day, but that doesn’t just mean they have to hit the gym or hop on a treadmill,” says Savvy’s Shaylen Carroll. “Many other activities, like yoga, cheerleading, soccer, figure skating—and, of course, dancing—count, too. That’s why this contest is so great—as girls practice their routines, they’ll be getting the physical activity they need without even realizing it! “

Videos for the Best Bones Forever! Let’s Dance Contest featuring Savvy kicks will be accepted through August 10, 2011 and winners will be announced on August 27, 2011. For more information and to upload videos, visit www.bbfletsdance.com.

Doctors say that 5-7% of school aged children and teens have ADD or ADHD (let's just call both 'ADD' in this article, OK?). To many of us, it seems that every second child is diagnosed with ADD, and that doctors are so quick to go the prescription pad and write prescriptions for strong medications like ritalin.

Even though we may be concerned about an 'ADD epidemic', the reality is that there are a number of kids and families who really struggle with this. ADD really impacts their functioning at school, at home, with their friends, and of course with their family. And they need help, and the best options.

That's why I want to tell you about a new book called: "Attention Difference Disorder: How To Turn Your ADHD Child or Teen's Differences Into Strengths in 7 Simple Steps". It's by Dr. Kenny Handelman, and it presents a fresh new approach for ADD in kids and teens.

Dr. Kenny is a board certified psychiatrist, who is an expert in ADD. He teaches other doctors, speaks internationally, and he also does clinical research in ADD. In his new book, he introduces a 'strength based approach' to ADD. He is concerned that most doctors present a very negative view of ADD to their patients, and this has a negative impact on them. He also encourages a very thorough approach to ADD. In his approach, it's not just about medications – it's about a whole treatment plan, which may include medications, along with a whole range of other treatments and strategies.

Dr. Kenny introduces a 7 step system. The steps are:

	1) Education About the Condition: ADD is a real medical condition based on biology and neurobiology, as well as genetics. In fact, research has shown it to be 80 to 85 percent heritable. It can also be caused by such risk factors as maternal smoking or drinking during pregnancy and premature birth. 60 to 70 percent of children or teens with ADD will still have it as adults.

	2) Ensuring a Proper Diagnosis: "When it comes to considering treatment like medication," Dr. Kenny writes, "it is very important to be sure about the diagnosis." ADD is diagnosed using criteria published by the American Psychiatric Association-and parents must find a doctor who knows and understands this diagnosis completely.

	3) Parenting Strategies: This is one of the most critical steps. Dr. Kenny outlines ten principles and strategies of parenting starting with a foundation of love, building toward implementation and maintenance of a structure that is consistent throughout the child's daily life.

	4) Educational Strategies: School issues are the main catalyst for ADD assessment. The first key to success is good communication between the school and the parent. Parents must understand the approaches taken to ADD by their particular schools. Dr. Kenny covers specific strategies that will be helpful to children and teens in school.

	5) Medication Treatments: Dr. Kenny reviews the science behind medications and explains the major issues around them. He advocates that "combination treatment", including both medications and therapy, be explored. Although there are now a number of medications available, they are easily understood when broken down between stimulants and non-stimulants.

	6) Alternative Treatments: 66 percent of parents admit to using some sort of alternative treatment for their ADD child. Dr. Kenny asserts that both parents and doctors need to develop better knowledge of these therapies, which he views as "complementary" to medical treatment. He discusses treatments ranging from diet change to homeopathy to neurofeedback.

	7) Treatment Integration: Steps 1-6 must be brought together so that parents can remain flexible. "As your child grows and develops, there will be changes to the treatment needed", Dr. Kenny explains. "You will need to be flexible and on top of the monitoring of your child's progress and symptoms to react quickly and proactively."

"Treatment of ADD is a marathon, not a sprint," Dr. Handelman writes in conclusion. Parents therefore must be committed to the work. Armed with the correct tools, though, they can send their ADD children off into the world with their differences turned into strengths.

“The Love That Is True” (www.TheLoveThatIsTrue.com) by Paul Chilson powerfully shows God’s love to children ages four and up with full-page illustrations and rhyme:

Before the beginning of all that we see,
There was only God, as a family of three.
And the love that flowed between the Three
Was the truest love that could ever be.

You can watch the video dramatization of the entire book at www.TheLoveThatIsTrue.com.

Mr. Chilson loves to read stories to his three children. As a Christian, he is always looking for ways to teach them about God’s love.

“The Love That Is True” is a 40 page full-color, hard cover, 7.5” x 11” book which takes each child on an adventure with God from before time, to creation, the angel rebellion, sin, Jesus’ birth and death, redemption, the church, life as a Christian, and finally to heaven, showing how much God loves us. This book teaches the fundamentals of Christianity in an exciting way, and places the Christmas story into God’s plan.

“The Love That Is True” is beautifully illustrated in vivid colors by award-winning illustrator Ruslan Sivachov. The book contains discussion questions and Bible references, and each verse can be sung to the included piano music.

The author, Paul Chilson, lives in Colorado and is available to speak to groups about “The Love That Is True”. His goal is to blow our minds on the topics of God, True Love, ourselves, and eternity. He’ll tell of how there are ten thousand stars in the universe for each grain of sand on the Earth, that True Love is very different than our love for hot buttered popcorn, how amazing a single cell in the human body is, and that our life here is only a blink compared to eternity.

The book is available for purchase at Amazon.com or direct from the publisher at www.TheLoveThatIsTrue.com (for signed copies and free shipping).

“The Love That Is True” is published by 2 Roads Publishing www.2RoadsPublishing.com, a ministry dedicated to sharing God’s love with children of all ages.
