Furthermore, involved fathers decrease the likelihood of suspension, crime, violent behavior, use of drugs, and alcohol.

"When I was a kid, getting ready to start my first day at school, my dad took me by the hand and said: 'Let's go son!' It is those words that I took with me throughout my education, knowing that I was safe. A boy can't be what he can't see," shares Leving.

Children deserve to have their father's support as they return to school. It can be compared to being at a school play or at a first Little League game. The strength provided to a child as dad provides a "back up" of confidence cannot be substituted.

A lot of responsibility comes with being a father, but there is also a lot of joy.  Once again there is a call out to Stand UP against Bullying, be proactive and communicate with your kids, show them positive messages, post-it notes on the bathroom mirror of encouragement and building positive self esteem to be less of a victim and have more confidince in their different and unique personality.

That one conversation changed my parenting techniques.  We started having FUN in the kitchen, including food fights while making cookies, (the mess was worth the memories.) 

As a family we came up with creative ways to get chores done or for deeds well done, including tickets that could be redeemed for something special they wanted.   20 years later my kids remember fun times, my love and our laughter. We have many Soldiers out there Fighting For our Freedom and a lot of our American Military are loosing thier Fathers and Mothers in this war.  Please take a moment and remember what Indepence Day means and those still fighting in the longest war in US history.

I work from home now and have had the opportunity to watch much of Oprah's last season, much like her first seasons when I was at home raising my children. 

Her message is consistent, short and oh so very powerful.  She said on her farewell show that the lesson that she wants people to take away from her show:

"You are responsible for the energy that you send out to the world – "No matter what your momma did or your daddy didn't do."  YOU are responsible for Your Life and what you do with it. 

She also reminded us that everyone has a purpose, that we all have a platform in which to share our message, wether it's your mirror or your kids, family and friends or your circle is on a larger scale and you have the opportunity (and responsibility) to use that platform to share your energy and message. 

Some of her last words on the show were of her one shortfall:

"People ask, Do I have regrets? I have none, really, about this show. But the one thing I feel I was not able to bring enough attention to, although I tried in 217 shows, was the sexual seduction, molestation and rape of children, worse now with the Internet than it was 25 years ago…"

Oprah has fought this fight throughout her 25 year long reign as the Queen of Talk Shows.  There are over 180 videos on her YouTube channel about sexual predators and over 80 pages of articles on Internet Sexual Predators.

I have been given the opportunity for THIS platform that you are reading on right now.  KidSafe.com has been a passion of mine since I started with the company several years ago as the Executive Assistant to the founder and CEO of a company wholly dedicated to keeping kids safe online and provide a platform where kids can play safely on the internet.   My boss saw my passion and my ability over the years and named me Content Manager.

We often hear research on fatherless children and how debilitating it is to their growth from birth through adulthood.  There are many opportunities to become a DAD not only to your own children but to others who for what ever reason do not have that role model in their life.

Some advice from Jack Wellman

Tell your children and grandchildren that you love them, every single day. Show them love. Tell their mother that you love her every single day. Show her love. With children and grandchildren, more is caught than taught. Give them freedom to fail. Love them unconditionally. Never forget the five most important words you can ever say to your children. I love you and I’m sorry.

Fatherhood Involvement = Less Drugs and Violence

One study of school-aged children found that children with good relationships with their fathers were less likely to experience depression, to exhibit disruptive behavior, or to lie and were more likely to exhibit pro-social behavior. This same study found that boys with involved fathers had fewer school behavior problems and that girls had stronger self-esteem. In addition, numerous studies have found that children who live with their fathers are more likely to have good physical and emotional health, to achieve academically, and to avoid drugs, violence, and delinquent behavior.

Hands on Fathers = Higher IQ

Children with involved, caring fathers have better educational outcomes. A number of studies suggest that fathers who are involved, nurturing, and playful with their infants have children with higher IQs, as well as better linguistic and cognitive capacities. These children are more patient and can handle the stresses and frustrations associated with schooling more readily than children with less involved fathers.

The influence of a father's involvement on academic achievement extends into adolescence and young adulthood. For instance, a 2001 U.S. Department of Education study found that highly involved biological fathers had children who were 43 percent more likely than other children to earn mostly “A’s”.

Involved Fathers = Emotional Stability

Even from birth, children who have an involved father are more likely to be emotionally secure, be confident to explore their surroundings, and, as they grow older, have better social connections with peers. These children also are less likely to get in trouble at home, school, or in the neighborhood.

Rough-housing Fathers = Emotional Control

The way fathers play with their children also has an important impact on a child's emotional and social development. Fathers spend a much higher percentage of their one-on-one interaction with infants and preschoolers in stimulating, playful activity than do mothers. From these interactions, children learn how to regulate their feelings and behavior. Rough-housing with dad, for example, can teach children how to deal with aggressive impulses and physical contact without losing control of their emotions.

Make sure you say thank you to your dad this Father's Day.  Let him know that you appreciate his presence, his strictness, his dedication and sacrifice, as well as the love he has for you.  The most special gift you can give is from the heart, not from the store, a hand written letter is most assuredly better than a tie!  (unless it's handmade)
