The very clinical observation gave rise to the study of child psychology and established it as a profound field of study in behavioral education. In fact, it can be affirmed that certain information regarding child psychology is essential for positive and constructive parenting. The very notion is blended in education to structure the evolutionary category of child psychology.

The purpose at the core is to breed a healthy generation for secure expectations. The initiative is very much encouraged in the first world countries where parents understand the impact of child psychology in family well being and on overall development. Yet, it is globally acknowledged that children in under developed countries are more in need of treatment than those of developed countries. The reasons behind the observation are the imminent and uncertain environment with a challenging society developed problems. Anyhow, the study on the whole explores the behavioral responses of children to find and suggest the best method for constructive change.

The role of the child psychologist is that of a gardener who trims and waters the plant to be in its best shape. The study is far more focused in developed countries, where the social, moral and personality challenges faced by the children are studied and aided with clinical psychology to support and fortify potential. In general, a child psychologists figure out the hidden difficulties of children notified from behavioral and emotional variances.

The consultation mostly commences in a friendly non obligatory environment that soothes children and parent by presenting simple resolution in parenting and educational styles. Often the child psychologist exercises their skill by not only helping with eliminating the development difficulties but also presenting solution for constructing the adequate skills of children at a reasonably proficient level and helping parents work through their children's problems considering the whole family and the advanced systems at work.

THE ROOTS OF SLOW READING

You already possess the ability to rapidly read essential information.  It is an innate ability.   Let me prove this to you.  Think about how much information your brain must process while driving an automobile on a highway.   It must view and analyze the motions of the surrounding cars, road conditions, weather conditions, read signs, and at the same time avoid hitting animals or people who might cross the road.   Instead of being overwhelmed by all this information you become so bored that you might turn on the radio, talk to other passengers, or make cell phone calls.    If  your brilliant brain is so adept at swiftly reading a road during a drive, then why can't it read text just as quickly and easily?  The answer is simple.  Instead of seeing a book during reading, your brain hears a voice that pronounces  the word sounds printed on the page.   Quite simply, you don't see a book–your hear it.   Yet, vision is faster and more powerful than hearing.   By becoming a more visual reader you will instantly increase your reading speed.   Let's begin this process together.

BECOMING A MORE VISUAL READER

Watch a child read and what do you see?   You see those reading words one letter at a time, such as D O G spells dog.   As an adult, your brain barely notices the letters appearing on the page.  Instead you see entire words like dog, or even entire phrases like "hot dog", "ice cream", or "United States of America".    "United States of America" contains four distinct words,  almost the width of an entire column in a textbook or newspaper.   If you can see four words then why can't you see entire lines, sentences, paragraphs, or even an entire page at a glance?   You can!   You just need a simple system that improves your brain's visual reading efficiency.  The first step is understanding how your magnificent brain is decoding text on the unconscious level.  Once you become conscious of this unconscious activity you will be able to speed it up to a higher reading speed still being able to comprehend, store, and recall essential information.

As a student, I trained to become a Psychobiologist at the State University of New York  at Binghamton.   During my studies I learned how our brain uses schema, or more simply our map of the world, whilst decoding text.   Each of us has a lifetime of experiences stored in our memory map.    Stored experiences that writers expect us to possess and use while reading.

Let's use an example to learn how you use schema to interpret text.  Imagine I wrote a story and told you, "the woman wore a red dress."  I would expect you to know what I meant by the word woman.     As a reader you don't expect me to explain to you that a woman is a female.   You already know this information.  You are using your schema or life database to read this text.

Probably the best way to demonstrate schema's important role in making text meaningful is by giving you a paragraph to read that is completely lacking any schematic clues.  Although the words in this passage taken from my Mega Speed Reading Program are simple and familiar you will find them almost impossible to read:

This is an easy thing to do.  If possible you will do it at home, but you can always go somewhere else if it is necessary.  Beware of overdoing it.  This is a major mistake and may cost you quite a bit of money.  It is far better to do too little than attempt to do too much.  Make sure everything is properly placed.  Now you are ready to proceed.  The next step is to put things into another convenient arrangement.  Once done you'll probably have to start again real soon.  Most likely, you'll be doing this for the rest of your life It's pretty tough decoding this text since it lacks any schematic clues.   Did you guess that this paragraph is discussing doing a load of  laundry?    Picture the word laundry printed right about this text as a single word title,  and read this passage once again.   Isn't it amazing how much clearer  this passage becomes simply by adding a single schematically significant word?   Even a single schematic clue can make text understandable.   From this example it is clear  that schema plays a major role in making text meaningful, but how do you know where to look for schematic clues while reading?   We find this out in our next newsletter

Cyberbullying is a global problem

NEW YORK — More than 10 percent of parents around the world say their child has been cyberbullied and nearly one-fourth know a youngster who has been a victim, according to a new Ipsos/Reuters poll.

And more than three-quarters of people questioned in the global survey thought cyberbullying differed from other types of harassment and warranted special attention and efforts from parents and schools."

The data clearly shows an appetite among global citizens for a targeted response to cyberbullying," said Keren Gottfried, of the global research firm Ipsos, which conducted the poll.

But, she added, whether or not schools live up to this mandate is in the hands of educators.

The online poll of more than 18,000 adults in 24 countries, 6,500 of whom were parents, showed the most widely reported vehicle for cyberbullying was social networking sites likes Facebook, which were cited by 60 percent.

Mobile devices and online chat rooms were a distant second and third, each around 40 percent.

While the report showed that awareness of cyberbullying was relatively high, with two-thirds saying they heard, read or had seen information on the phenomenon, cultural and geographic differences abounded.

In Indonesia, 91 percent said they knew about cyberbullying, in which a child, group of children or younger teen intentionally intimidates, threatens or embarrasses another child or group through the use of information technology such as social media or mobile devices.

Australia followed at 87 percent, while Poland and Sweden trailed slightly behind. But only 29 percent in Saudi Arabia, and 35 percent in Russia, had heard of cyberbullying.

In the United States, where cases of cyberbullying have been widely reported to have been linked to teen-age suicides, the figure was 82 percent.

Gottfried described the survey as the first global study of its kind and a benchmark to where assessments of cyberbullying vary.

"The key to this study is that it measures parental awareness of cyberbullying, not actual rates of the behavior," she said. "While we can't speculate on what actually happens, it is quite possible that the proportion of children actually being cyberbullied is in fact understated, since we are speaking with the parents, not the kids."

In India 32 percent of parents said their child had experienced cyberbullying, followed by 20 percent in Brazil and 18 percent in Canada and Saudi Arabia and 15 percent in the United States.

The highest incidence of people knowing of a child in the community being targeted was in Indonesia, with 53 percent. But only 14 percent there said their child had been cyberbullied — less than in Canada, Brazil, Saudi Arabia and the United States.

Overall, parents in France and Spain reported some of the lowest incidence of cyberbullying either of their own child or one in their community.

Gottfried said that future studies could show whether there was a trend toward greater awareness of cyberbullying, and shed some light on what affects parental awareness.

In this week's SI, I wrote an essay about DeSean Jackson of the Eagles. In it, I neglected to mention the enormous human tragedy of the Eagles losing three football games and instead focused on something else: Jackson's crusade against bullying.

Inspired by a Pennsylvania kid named Nadin Khoury, who stood up against bullies, Jackson spent the offseason on his anti-bullying campaign. Jackson believes athletes can make a huge difference when it comes to stopping bullying.

In many ways, it is the ideal cause for a pro athlete — exactly the right way to use our country's sports-idol worship for the greater good. There are a million great causes, of course. Anybody who raises money to fight a disease or help underprivileged kids is doing a wonderful thing. But athletes are uniquely suited to fight bullying. From elementary school to pick-up games at the Y, they command respect from their peers. They epitomize cool. And if they say bullying is not cool, that resonates.

But it occurs to me that sports can make a huge impact on stopping bullying in another way, too. We just have to view sports differently.

Playing sports is supposed to build self-esteem, keep us mentally and physically healthy and teach us how to work with others. But Leila Steinberg, who works with Jackson on his anti-bullying campaign, said: "The dynamic of cooperation has to come in addition to competition. We've kind of lost that."

Why?

"The parents half the time are the worst," Steinberg said. "They don't know how to watch their (kids') games. If we're honest, we live through our kids. I started observing all the parents who don't live through their kids in a healthy way. I started seeing this dynamic … You see these parents fighting in the stands."

Many parents are so worried about teaching their kids how to win that they never teach them how to lose. I'm not just talking about the infamous parents who measure their kids' muscles at birth, have them lifting weights as an infant and don't let them walk near a Dairy Queen, let alone stop in and have a cone. In fact, I explicitly am not talking about those parents. I think it's too easy to point to them and say, "They're the ones with lousy priorities. They don't get it. I do."

I'm talking about the rest of us. We tell eight-year-olds to focus on one sport year-round. It is commonplace for kids switch high schools to get more playing time. Kids learn that winning is the most important thing, even if nobody says it directly.

And as a result, instead of feeling good about accomplishing whatever they can accomplish, they think sports are just about beating somebody. They don't get the social benefits of playing sports: improved self-esteem and a comfort and understanding of who they are. If more people had that, we would treat people better. We wouldn't bully as much.

What if we told our kids to focus on helping their teammates, not beating their opponents? The on-field objectives would be the same: To excel athletically and try to win. But the reasons for playing would change. Sports would be a much more positive experience.

Steinberg's nonprofit, Alternative Intervention Models, encourages kids through the arts and athletics. Think about how differently we view those endeavors. We don't send kids on traveling art teams. If a 10-year-old draws something surprisingly beautiful, we don't angle to turn him into a millionaire by 25.

We seem to understand that arts are an outlet for creative expression and self-discovery. Sports should be more like that. What if you saw your kid out on the baseball field and viewed him not as a hitter, but as a painter? What if he wasn't trying to be a hero to others, but to himself?

Sports will never be exactly like the arts. Most of our sports are team games, so more people have a vested interest in the result. We can let people down in sports, and we don't cheer at art exhibitions.

"With arts, it is usually self-driven," Steinberg said. "Sports, it's much more acceptable, it's much more social. A lot of times, those that are drawn to the arts for that outlet. It's not done in the community in the same way. The participation is not the same. That's why sports is so much more important in terms of tools you can instill. You have everybody in the family observing."

Still, if sports were more like the arts — marked more by encouragement than discipline, with a different measurement of success — we would get so much more out of them. "The potential for reframing how we work with our kids is huge," Steinberg said.

We can start by redefining what it means to win.

I have found that even I, Kid Safe blogger, have become a little jaded to all the daily reports of missing children, then the next day they are found safe and sound by someone within the family usually taken by another family member and just a "lack of communication" or worse news that for some reason i choose not to add to this site. 

Today, this was a revelation for me.  If I am "just a blogger" and have this attitude, what must the police think when they get these calls?  The investigators that deal with this on a daily basis.  I know for me the whole Casey Anthony tragedy really upset me in a different way than the Amber Dubois case effected me.  You see I lived in Escondido when Amber Dubois went missing and I was working at Kid Safe and was HORRIFIED that they would not issue an "Amber Alert", they did not take the case seriously "for reasons unknown to the public".  I was deeply entrenched in the case, it was personal for me.  I lived and worked in the community and I take my position at CEN very seriously.  I felt that if "we" couldn't even get an Amber Alert issued in our own home town how could we proclaim to be the national source for Child Safety?  

I wrote more posts on the her case than any other case in the last 5 years.  I was asked to remove several of my posts, as they were derogatory towards the Escondido Police Department and it was creating a "negative" affect on the case.  So i acquiesced, against my personal feelings and judgement, "for the better good" of the company.  And NO the requests to take the posts down did not come from within CEN and CEN management left the decision up to me.   i just wanted her found.  I wanted her case taken seriously, I wanted her parents to have some peace, I was angry for them and obviously I took it all very personally.  

So when I read this report today, I remembered reading about it last week when I had chosen NOT to post it because I "assumed" the child would be found the next day and by the time the KidSafe readers got around to reading it, it would be old news or worse, I would have a stronger "story" to write about.

Then I got to the last paragraph of this report and really started to question myself, my commitment to keeping children safe, what constitutes a "story" with me, the "Content Manager" of KidSafe.com. 

Below is an excerpt from the AP "story" released today which I have scheduled to post before this one that I am writing now.  I decided to separate the posts because I don't want my personal story to effect the readers mind of the missing child report.  All Missing Child Reports MUST be taken seriously, Must be judged as TRUE "Kidnapping's" until found otherwise, by the police, the governments, the schools, the extended family, the friends AND the media, including "bloggers" like myself who proclaim to be concerned with the safety of Children.  

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A New York-based security consultant who said he was hired by a wealthy benefactor to help search for a missing baby in Kansas City got little response Wednesday from police who have been looking for the child for more than a week……….

…………."With Bill, one benefit, because he has celebrity status as a private investigator, the media is going to be interested in seeing what he's doing," Mesis said. Later, he added, "He's putting his reputation on the line, too."

A year after the Amber Dubois Kidnapping, she was found, sadly, not alive, and not a story I like to talk about very much.

A little neighbor girl disappeared when I was about 8 or 10, and a good part of our Indiana farm town turned out to look for her. It was one for all and all for one in the village of Mount Summit, where pretty much every person knew every child on sight. No description required.

The drama continued for a while, until somebody thought to search the closets of the Johnsons' house. Jennifer was safe and sound asleep in one of them.

This was around 1960, a time at least perceived as more innocent. A missing child was cause for the kind of alarm that roused the neighbors, not necessarily the police. I don't remember Jennifer's frantic parents calling the sheriff, although I suppose they would have gotten around to it if she hadn't turned up so soon.

Crime was not so much on our minds then. I might head out on my bicycle early in the morning, check in at lunch and dinner, and be out who-knows-where until long after dark in a town that, while tiny, was cut two ways by busy highways.

Did anybody pause to consider how ripe I was for abduction, and how many hours I could be gone before anybody noticed? I don't think so. And, compared with many of my friends, I had a hovering mother.

So how long would I need to have been gone before my mom would be prosecuted for not calling the cops? Odd as the question might sound, some lawmakers in Illinois — including Rep. Dwight Kay, R-Glen Carbon — are proposing a legal deadline: 24 hours.

The sponsors are among leaders in several states motivated by the case of 2-year-old Caylee Anthony, missing in Florida for about 30 days in 2008 before her mother, Casey Anthony, claimed a nanny made off with the girl. Cops decided the nanny never existed and charged the mother with murder even before the child's body was found.

A jury decided in July that Casey Anthony was not guilty of murder, an outcome that many people found incredible and that raised the question of why an innocent mother would wait a month to report her child was missing. (At trial, the defense claimed, but offered no evidence, that what she really hid was knowledge of her daughter's accidental death.)

In any event, those circumstances were widely considered an outrage, and an outrage surely demands some kind of action.

Hence, Illinois House Bill 3800, which would make it a felony to fail to call law enforcement if a child under age 13 in your care is missing more than 24 hours.

You're probably asking yourself right about now what kind of parent — Casey Anthony notwithstanding — would need to be compelled by fear of prison to do such an obvious thing.

I also wonder about that, and whether a law would make any difference.

The most common killers of children are the victims' parents. It's awful, but that's the way things are. If the parent is responsible for the disappearance, what difference will the law make? In such a case, the circumstances reported to police — including the time given for the disappearance — will certainly be self-serving.

But if it is a real kidnapping, 24 hours would be way too long. Studies show that the vast majority of children taken by strangers and killed are dead within the first day.

Besides, Illinois already makes it a felony to lose track of a child under 13 in your care for more than 24 hours.

The reporting requirement might even do some harm.

Consider an instance in which a parent decides on Thursday to tell police that nobody has seen Junior since Tuesday. Oops. A friend points out that such a reporting delay is a Class 4 felony. That could mean prison time. So the police get told that Junior disappeared on Wednesday, a lie that could doom the whole investigation.

Admittedly, this would not be a very good parent. But the legislation is, by its nature, aimed at not-very-good parents.

The bill looks like an example of a laudable intent that fails to heed a salient warning provided by humorist Will Rogers almost 80 years ago: "You can't legislate intelligence and common sense into people."
