No Amber Alert for Amber Dubois?

February 23rd, 2009 admin Posted in Amber Alert, School Safety 1 Comment »

CEN and KidSafe are located right here in Escondido, where 14 year old Amber Leeanne Dubois, has been missing for 10 days. As I was posting the Amber Alert that just came out about the 4 year old girl this morning I noticed that Amber Dubois was not listed on the site where National Amber Alerts are listed.  I got curious and started doing some digging.

I just spoke with Escondido Police Department and “there aren’t any new updates at this time” was all they could tell me.  This is a truly sad story that has caused an outbreak of infighting and bickering between city and county officials,  police departments, the media and many concerned citizens.

It appears that because she is 14 she is of the “runaway” age, especially because she has divorced parents and that it the stance that the officials are taking.  They say that this Amber does not meet the criteria for an “Amber Alert.”  I can’t remember ever hearing that child predators only seek out children that are from traditional family units and that they aren’t interested in children after they turn 14.  Have you ever heard that?

I called the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and they do have her listed as a missing child, but they are not the one’s who issue Amber Alerts so she is not listed on the Amber Alert page.  The kind lady who answered the phone said that each state has different criteria for what constitutes and Amber Alert and that they couldn’t help me any further but they did lead me to the California State Clearinghouse for Missing Children, they in turn have led me to the Highway Patrol.

It seems the Highway Patrol is in charge of issuing Amber Alerts in California.  The California Highway Patrol office that handles Escondido put me through to Don Fields and he “has no answer for me” but referred me back to the Escondido Police Department since they are the investigating agency. So again I called the Escondido Police Department and no one is available to speak with me.

I did leave my cell phone number and will promptly update this post as soon as they return my call.  I am very concerned about this girl and being from Escondido myself I am very concerned about the message we are sending to child predators.  I can’t even write the things that are running through my head right now.

Amber Leeanne Dubois is 14, and 14 is still VERY young, she dissappeared on her way to school on Friday, February 13th, the day she was finally able to purchase the Lamb that she had been waiting for, for a school project.  Similar looking girls have been attempted to be abducted in local towns including Poway which is just a few miles south of here.  Please contact your local police department or call 911 if you have any information about this girl.  Whether she ranaway or not, she is in danger and needs to be brought home to her parents, who must be going through a living hell right now. My thoughts are prayers go out to them.

Please forward this post or this information to everyone you know – if Escondido won’t post an Amber Alert, let’s make our own.  Post this on every website and social media site, every email you have and make flyers if you can.  Someone knows where this girl is and we need to do all we can to find her.

Top 10 Rules For School Safety

April 10th, 2008 admin Posted in School Safety No Comments »

Parents, review these 10 critical safety tips with your kids.  Reinforce them daily and your kids will become safety experts in no time at all.

1. Always TAKE A FRIEND when walking or riding your bike to and from school.  It’s safer and more fun to be with your friends. Walk and ride in well-lit areas, and never take short cuts.  Follow all the bicycle rules, especially the one about riding on the right side of the street.

2. Stay with a group while waiting at the bus stop.  If anyone bothers you while going to or from school, get away from that person, and TELL a trusted adult like your parents or teacher.  If an adult approaches you for help or directions, remember grownups needing help should not ask children for help; they should ask other adults.

3. If someone you don’t know or feel comfortable with offers you a ride, say NO. Never hitchhike, and only accept a ride from someone if your parents have told you it is okay.

4. If someone follows you on foot, get away from him or her as quickly as you can. If someone follows you in a car, turn around and go in the other direction. Always be sure to TELL your parents or a trusted adult what happened.

5. If someone tries to take you somewhere, quickly get away and yell, “This person is trying to take me away!” or “This person is not my father (mother)!”

6. Never leave school with someone you don’t feel comfortable with or know. Always CHECK FIRST with your parents or another trusted adult. If someone you don’t know or feel comfortable with tells you that there is an emergency and they want you to go with them, always CHECK FIRST before you do anything. Make sure you TELL a trusted adult if you notice someone you don’t know hanging around.

7. Leave items and clothing with your name on them at home. If someone you don’t know calls out your name, don’t be fooled or confused.

8. If you want to change your plans after school, always CHECK FIRST with your parents. Never play in parks, malls, or video arcades by yourself. Make sure you have your parents’ permission, and they know where you are going to be. Never accept money or gifts from anyone until you CHECK FIRST with your parents.

9. If you go home alone after school, check to see that everything is okay before you go in. Once inside, call your parents to let them know that you are okay. Make sure you follow your “Home Alone” rules of keeping the door locked; not opening the door for or talking to anyone who stops by unless the person is a trusted family friend or relative, you feel comfortable being alone with that person, and the visit has been pre-approved by your parents; and not telling people who call that you are home alone. Have a neighbor or trusted adult that you can call if you’re scared or there’s an emergency.

10. Trust your feelings. If someone makes you feel scared or uncomfortable, get away as fast as you can and TELL a trusted adult. You deserve to feel safe, and you should keep asking until you get the help you need.
